Mere hours before the Logistics Unit of TEMA was about to conduct routine checks and maintenance works to the Emergency Response Kit at the Golden Lane Community Center on Monday 13th February, a call was received about a break-in to the Community Center- housing the Emergency Shelter, where several items were reported to have been stolen.

Immediately following the call, a logistics team was deployed to the center to assess the extent of the theft. An extensive amount of items were found to be missing from the kit, where they were stored, to provide relief in the event of an incident.

Items stolen were as follow:

1 Generator
1 Fire Extinguisher
2 Portable Radios
2 packs D4 Cell Batteries
2 MRE Meals
2 Torch Lights
2 Cutlasses
2 Hammers
1 Mop pan (plastic)
2 Mop pans (metal)
10 cases Bottled Water
2 First Aid Kits (MSA)
2 Mops
5 Tarpaulins (Sunico Yellow 12x24)
4 Lanterns
17 Blankets
4 Bed Sheets
1 Gas jug
1 Safety Glass
1 Stihl tool pouch

This incident allegedly occurred between Friday 10th and Sunday 12th February and was reported to the Moriah Police Station, where the investigations are ongoing. One primary suspect has already been held in connection to the incident while attempting to have the items sold. The young man from the Golden Lane area appeared at the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 15th February.  Two (2) of the stolen items have been recovered by police and were positively identified on Tuesday 14th February by TEMA’s staff.

The remaining items of the Emergency Kit have since been removed and secured elsewhere until the village council declares the community center safe for the storage of these items. Anyone with information regarding this incident is being asked to contact TEMA at 660-7489 or the Moriah Police Station at 660-0029, as investigations are still being conducted.
